Print Servers

Common Problems

My printer shows "printer offline" when I want to print.

The offline and online status only works, when the printer is locally via USB connected to your computer and this status has nothing to do with the real status of the printer.
Please go to printers and faxes and right click on the printer you want to use over the network, choose "use printer online".

Make sure the CX-Print TCP (C-series) or Standard TCP/IP Port (SX-series) port is properly installed and points to the right IP. Printing should work now.

For Windows 7:
Please select "Show Printjobs" and then uncheck the point with "use printer offline".

What is the difference between "device server mode (full feature mode)" and "printserver mode"? (C-Series)

The "full feature mode (device server mode)" was basically made for Mac OS users. If this is enabled during the setup or over the webinterface all features of your printer get used via SX-VL. You need to connect in SX-VL before you can print, scan, use the card reader. The printer must be installed on a port with the description "virtual printer port for USB" and must switch between online and offline when you connect and disconnect in SX-VL. This mode is also the only mode that supports printing via Mac OS (unless you have network enabled drivers).

When your C-6700WG/C-6600GB is set to "print server mode" you need to print with the help of a "PRICOM Print CX-TCP Port". Only functions like scanning, card reader etc. are used via SX-VL. If you have a single function printer you don't need SX-VL at all. If this mode is enabled printing via Mac OS only works, if you have the right drivers, see the other FAQ entry about Mac OS and drivers please.

My printer shows "not responding" in the status monitor. (C-series print server)

Please make sure that the printer is in online mode (see FAQ above) and make sure that the CX-Print TCP Port points to the right IP.

Usually this happens when the printserver (for example C-6200U or C-6700WG) gets an IP from a DHCP. This DHCP is often integrated in broadband routers and has a lease time. If a certain unit with a certain MAC address again requests an IP within this lease time the DHCP assigns the same IP like last time. If the DHCP lease time is over or if the router is resettet and assigns a differnt IP you need to reconfigure the CX-Print port. Best way is to select a local port like LPT1, delete the old port and create a new port by clicking "add port" - select Pricom Print CX-TCP Port - "new port" and follow the wizard.

To avoid this use static DHCP entries (not avaialble on all routers), set the lease time to a very high value or use a static IP on your printserver.
You don't need to assign static IP addresses to all units on your network in this case. A mixed environment with some static and some dynamic IP addresses and still a DHCP running for guests is no problem.

Does my C-6200U support Windows 7 and Canon printers like the iP4700?

The C-6200U was released 2002 and the new unit C-6700WG or C-6600GB is already released. There will be no firmware updates for the C-6200U anymore to support new Canon printers (from September 2009 on) and also the unit does not get tested with Windows 7, there is no offical support for Windows 7 with the C-6200U.

The C-6200U is offically end of life since December 2011.

Please switch to the new model C-6600GB or one of our device servers.

My unit seems to be broken. What can I do?

Please check the status of the LED's. If the LED's still work the unit is usually not broken. You just might need to reconfigure the unit.

If the LED's really don't work anymore, also not when you plug in the AC, then the unit might be broken. Please keep in mind that some units don't have LED's that are always on. Just the status LED will blink for a second when the unit gets powered up and if no network cable or a broken one is connected. The network cable needs to be connected to a switch or hub in addition.

If no LED works at all please contact our support team with this information and complete the RMA form from the link on the left side with the RMA number given.

How can I print on the USB port of the SX-200?

The SX-200 has multiple ports, as long as the unit has only one single IP address you can reach the different ports via different RAW ports or service names if you want to print with LPR.

Default settings are this:

Parallel: 9100
USB 1: 9101
USB 2: 9102
USB 3: 9103
USB 4: 9104
USB 5: 9105
USB 6: 9106
USB 7: 9107
USB 8: 9108

If you want to adjust the USB port to RAW port 9100 please use those commands via telnet (copy&paste):

set service 1 tcp 9109
set service 7 tcp 9100
set service 13 tcp 9101
set service 16 tcp 9102
set service 19 tcp 9103
set service 22 tcp 9104
set service 25 tcp 9105
set service 28 tcp 9106
set service 31 tcp 9107

For LPR printing please check for the queue name via "sh ip" on telnet. The queue name is the service name.

example:

Local> sh ip IP is enabled
IP address    192.0.0.192               Boot tries    3
Subnet mask   0.0.0.0                   Boot method   AUTO
IP Gateway    0.0.0.0                   Max window    10240
 (set manually)
LPD banner    disabled                  Timeout         1 min
LPD retries are disabled                Keepalive       0 min  Service                           Port  TCP port
 SLX8DD845_P1                       P1     9110
 SLX8DD845_U1                       U1     9100
 SLX8DD845_U2                       U2     9102
 SLX8DD845_U3                       U3     9103

* Refer to Q26 for the procedure to initialize the product to factory default

The "ping" command is valid, but I cannot print.

Check the following to identify the cause of the problem.
[There may be another device assigned with the same IP address, which may be responding to the "ping " command]
->Check the IP address in "arp -a" command, after send to "ping" command.
->Check the IP address of the devices on your network. If you find the duplicate IP addresses, assign a different IP address to one of the devices.

TIP"arp -a"To verify if this is the case, after you send the "ping" command, issue "arp -a" command, then, check the arp table to see if the target device has a proper combination of the IP address and Ethernet Address. If there is a duplicated IP address exists, in the "arp" table there will be an unmatched combination of the Ethernet address and associated IP addresses.

[Your printer driver on your PC may not be properly installed]
->Check the printer driver version and/or installation status.
->If a printer port has not been assigned to the product, be sure to use appropriate utility for the product such as the "PRICOM-Print" to create a printing port.

A different IP address is assigned every time the product is booted.

There may be router or server with DHCP or RARP function in your network. Check the DHCP server to see if the following solves the problem.

Assign an IP address to the product in an environment without a router or server using only a HUB.
->Know the range of IP addresses that your DHCP server assigns.
->Be sure to assign an IP address for the product from the DHCP assignable range, but the address must be in the same segment.
->Disable DHCP/BOOTP/RARP protocols.
Ex)In the case where the DHCP server assigns a range between 192.168.0.2 - 192.168.0.32, use any of the IP addresses between 192.168.0.33 - 192.168.0.254 for the product, such as 192.168.0.35.

* Do not assign a duplicate IP address for another device.
* It is recommended not to use 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.0.254, because the DHCP server may have this address.

2)Register the IP address of PRICOM in the DHCP server
->Register the IP address of the product in the DHCP server.
->For detailed configuration, refer to the DHCP server manual.

The product is initialized to factory default every time the product is booted.

->The factory default function of our product may be enabled Ensure that DIP switch2 is OFF. (Only for products with DIP switches function)
->The product configuration may not have been completed properly. Typically the product setup information is not properly registered if you canceled the setup while transferring the configuration data to the product, and if you experienced a network stoppage problem during the setup. Please retry the setup procedure one more time.

To complete the setup, the configuration parameters must be written to the product. If you attempted to configure an IP address by using "arp" or "ping" command, or via "IP address configuration" in the setup utility, the setup configuration may not have been written to the product properly. After you configure the product with the setup utility or telnet command, ensure to re-start the print server.

The print data is garbled.

->If you are using standard TCP/IP printing in Windows2000/XP environment, ensure that you have checked the parameter "LPR Byte Counting Enabled"

->You may be using the wrong printer driver. Reset the printer, and use the proper printer driver. Try to print again.

->The printer driver information may be corrupted. Uninstall the printer driver, restart the PC, install the latest printer driver, then try to print again.

->The printer may have part of an unfinished print job left in memory. Cancel the print job from the client PC, reset the product and then reset the printer to clear the data, try to print again

I cannot print a self-diagnostic report.

[Parallel port setting]
-> There may be problems parallel port setting.
-> Change the configuration of printerI/F for the AUTO or port configure fitting printer port.
[The printer may not have its own font in the printer]

How can I use the fax of my Canon MFP on my C-6700WG?

You need to connect in SX-VL to use the fax function.
The fax might get detected as a printer, please go to properties, advanced and switch the drivers from printer to fax.

How to reset my device to factory default?

Please keep the small black button on the unit pressed while you insert the AC adapter. After about 6 seconds the STAT LED will turn on, you can lift the button.

If you print server does not have a small button but dip switches instead please set dip switch 2 to on to reset the device to factory default.

Can I print from Mac OS on my C-6200U or C-6700WG Printserver or in general Printserver from silex?

In general our print servers all support TCP/IP which is available from Mac OS 10.2.7 or higher, some also support apple talk, so basically: Yes, Mac OS is supported.

The issue you might find is that the drivers you can get from Canon or other printer manufacturer do not support printing over the network in most cases. The system for Windows works like this: Any driver that is installed can be used on any port, so you can just select a network port, a local port or any other port, once the dirvers are installed. On Mac OS it works in a different way: If your drivers work with a local USB connection it does not mean that they also work over the network. Usually you need special drivers to support network printing on Mac OS.

You can find those drivers from a 3rd company: http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php3 or http://www.printfab.net
Those drivers might be not for free.

Please use the attached manual to install those drivers.

In general the C-6200U and C-6700WG is not supported on SX-VL and Mac OS, so if you have a multi function device scanning and other SX-VL related functions are not supported.

One other solution if you don't want to buy those drivers is to get one of our real USB device servers (SX-1000U, SX-2000U2, SX-2000WG, SX-3000GB), they can be used with normal drivers that come from the printer manufacturer for Mac OS because the printer gets emulated on a local, virtual USB port.

The C-6700WG with firmware 1.6.0 or higher or C-6600GB can be switched to device server operation mode, via webinterface. Usage like on a SX-2000WG is then possible including printing via SX-VL.

What exactly is the AL-1000U? How to use it? How to configure?

The AL-1000U is a OEM print server made for Aloka. It has capabilities of printing and sharing a FAT storage device.

You can connect a simple printer via USB and use a Standard TCP/IP port for printing. On Windows just install the printer drivers and switch the port in the properties of the printer drivers to a "Standard Windows TCP/IP port", just enter the IP, you can either print on a RAW port #9100 or via LPR, the queue name is "lp". There is no support for a status monitor and the printer has to be compatible with normal print servers. (for example GDI based printers need especially adjusted print servers!)

For access to a connected storage device just access the device like any other samba file sharing. See the attached example for Windows. (Please adjust the part with "IP of AL-1000U" to the IP your system has, like 192.168.1.10). You can also search for the unit in the network enironment or use the DNS name.

For configuration and setup you can use the software "AdminManager".

There is no firmware update available and there is no chance to change the firmware to any other device, add or remove functions of the current firmware.
